Uzbek belongs to the Turkic language family. Along with Turkish and Azerbaijani, Uzbek is one of the largest languages in this family.
Uzbek is closely related to Uyghur, which is spoken in Xinjiang Province in China. More than 26 million people live in the Republic of Uzbekistan. Over 70 percent of the population say Uzbek is their native language. In addition, over 100 different ethnic groups live together in Uzbekistan, maintaining their own languages and cultural characteristics.
Other Uzbek-speaking groups live in Afghanistan, the People's Republic of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. A characteristic of Turkic languages is their agglutinative language structure. To learn and understand Uzbek, Turkish, or Azerbaijani, for example, you first need to understand what an agglutinative language is. The word agglutinate comes from Latin and means to clump or stick together. The central principle of this type of language structure is the suffix. A suffix is a suffix added to the end of a word, thus changing or expanding its meaning. You can add several suffixes to a word in succession, thus further specifying its meaning. Thus, the more information the words contain, the longer they become. There are many different types of suffixes that can be added to a word.
