Interesting facts about the language
Czech belongs to the Slavic language family. Slavic languages are divided into East Slavic (Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian), South Slavic (Bulgarian, Macedonian, Slovenian, and Serbo-Croatian), and West Slavic. Czech, along with Slovak and Polish, belongs to the West Slavic language family. All of these languages have their origins in Proto-Slavic, which emerged as a separate branch of Indo-European about 5,000 years ago.
Slavic languages are spoken as native languages by more than 300 million people worldwide today. Czech is spoken as native language by approximately 10 million people in the Czech Republic. In addition, there are approximately two million who live primarily in the USA and Canada, but also in Germany and Austria, as well as in numerous other countries. Czech uses the Latin alphabet—unlike several other Slavic languages, such as Russian and Ukrainian, which are written with Cyrillic letters.
