Syria is a country in the Middle East and part of the Mashreq region. Syria borders Israel and Jordan to the south, Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, and Iraq to the east. The country's capital is Damascus. Since spring 2011, demonstrations against the Syrian government have escalated into civil war in Syria. More than 5 million Syrians have fled the country, to neighboring countries or to Europe. 6.3 million people are internally displaced. The civil war led to a division of the country. By May 2015, the terrorist organization Islamic State controlled over half of Syrian territory.
