Interesting facts about the language
Swedish belongs to the Nordic or North Germanic language group, whose roots lie in the Indo-European language family. Other Indo-European language branches include the Germanic (e.g. German and English), the Slavic (e.g. Russian and Polish), and the Baltic (e.g. Latvian and Lithuanian). Swedish is spoken today by around nine million people, of whom the absolute majority (8.2 million) live in the Kingdom of Sweden. Swedish has many similarities with German. The alphabet and spelling are very similar, only the pronunciation differs – sometimes quite significantly – from German. Swedish uses the Latin alphabet, but the order is slightly different from German.
