Interesting facts about the language

The Romanian language belongs – as the name suggests – to the Romance languages. All of these languages developed from spoken (Vulgar) Latin, the language of the Roman Empire. Within the Romance language family, Romanian belongs to the subgroup of Eastern Romance languages. The best-known Western Romance languages are French, Spanish, and Portuguese. In addition to Romanian, the Eastern Romance languages also include Italian, Corsican, and Dalmatian. The latter was once spoken in the area of the eastern Adriatic coast but is now extinct. All Romance languages have in common that they have significantly evolved from spoken Latin in their individual regions since Late Antiquity. During the Early Middle Ages, the individual Romance languages emerged, and the first written records emerged.

However, compared to the other Romance languages, the origins of Romanian remain largely obscure. Linguists have two different theories regarding the origin of the Romanian language. First, there is the continuity theory, which claims that the population of the former Roman province of Dacia originated the language. Second, there is the migration theory, which claims that Romanians first migrated to present-day Romania, primarily to Transylvania, in the 10th century. Although written records in Romanian are not documented until the 16th century, the origin of the Romanian language is thought to have occurred between 600 and 900 AD.

The Romanian language was written using the Cyrillic alphabet from the 16th century onwards. From the 18th century onwards, the Latin alphabet was used in Transylvania. In 1862, Romania officially introduced its own Romanian alphabet, whichwhich is based on the Latin alphabet. The Romanian alphabet used today consists of 26 Latin letters and five additional special characters: ă, â, î, ş, and ţ.
