Interesting facts about the language

Polish is spoken as a native language by at least 45 million people worldwide, the majority of whom (around 37 million) live in Poland. Larger Polish-speaking groups are found primarily in its neighboring countries, primarily Ukraine, but also in Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

The countries with the most Polish-speaking people in Western Europe are Germany and Ireland. At least 2.5 million Polish-speakers also live in the United States. Other Polish-speaking minorities live in places like Argentina, Australia, and Israel. Due to its central location in Europe, Polish has absorbed many influences from other languages, especially Czech.

Unlike Russian, for example, Polish is not written in the Cyrillic script, but in the Latin alphabet. Polish belongs to the Slavic language family. The Slavic languages are divided into the East Slavic (Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian), the South Slavic (Bulgarian, Macedonian, Croatian, Slovenian, and Serbo-Croatian), and the West Slavic language family. Along with Slovak and Czech, Polish also belongs to the West Slavic language family. All of these languages have their origins in Proto-Slavic, which developed as a separate branch of Indo-European around 5,000 years ago. Slavic languages are now spoken as native languages by more than 300 million people worldwide.

The Polish alphabet has 32 Latin letters. Q, V, and X do not exist in the Polish alphabet and appear only in foreign words. In addition, the Polish alphabet has several letters that are not found in the German alphabet.
