Interesting facts about the language

The Norwegian language, which comprises the two standard varieties Bokmål (English: Book Language) and Nynorsk (English: New Norwegian), belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages. Norwegian is spoken as a native language by approximately five million Norwegians, the majority of whom live in Norway, where it is the official language. Although Nynorsk translates to "New Norwegian" in English, it is the older of the two language varieties. Nynorsk is closely related to Icelandic and Faroese (Färingian). Although many Norwegians speak Nynorsk in everyday life, few practice its written form.

As a written language, a large part of the population of Norway uses Bokmål – in English, the book language. This variant of Norwegian is more widely used than Nynorsk and It developed later, based on Danish. This variant also dominates everyday life, at work, and in the Norwegian media. For this reason, in the course series from Sprachenlernen24, you will hear, read, and learn Bokmål. Norwegian belongs to the Germanic language family. The vocabulary of Bokmål contains influences from Danish, Swedish, and Low German. As a speaker of a Germanic language, many words will certainly seem familiar to you as you learn. You will soon find that you will be able to read Norwegian quite quickly.
