Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese, English, and Hindi. If you speak Spanish, you can communicate with over 450 million people around the world. But Spanish isn't always Spanish everywhere. Generally speaking, a distinction must be made between two major variants: The Spanish spoken in Europe (i.e., in Spain) sounds different from the Spanish you'll hear in America. Within South and Central America, the pronunciation and vocabulary of Spanish differs considerably from country to country.

The variant of Spanish spoken in Mexico is considered easy to understand and learn, even for non-native speakers. In fact, the language spoken in Mexico is generally somewhat slower and more articulate than in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. Another unique feature of Mexico is that, in addition to Spanish, many other languages of the country's indigenous population are spoken here, and all of these languages have influenced Spanish over time.

Over 100 million people live in Mexico. Most of them speak the country's official language: Spanish. Many also speak another so-called indigenous language. Indigenous languages are the languages of the country's original inhabitants – the Maya, the Nahua, and the descendants of the Aztecs. In addition to Spanish, the following languages can also be heard in Mexico: Nahuatl (the most widely spoken language), Mayan (the language of the Maya), Mixtecó, Otomí, Chol, and many others. A total of 62 national languages are recognized in Mexico.

All of these languages have influenced the vocabulary of Spanish in Mexico and left their mark. Words and expressions from indigenous languages have been adopted for many expressions in botany, everyday life, and cuisine.
