Interesting facts about the language
Latvian is one of the East Baltic languages, whose roots, via the Baltic languages, can in turn be counted among the Indo-European languages. Other Indo-European language branches include the Germanic (e.g., German and English), the Slavic (e.g., Russian and Polish), and the Nordic (e.g., Danish and Swedish) language branches. Another living Baltic language besides Latvian is Lithuanian. Estonian, spoken in neighboring Estonia, is considered a Finno-Ugric language. Latvian (latviešu valoda) is spoken as a native language by around 2 million people, the majority of whom live in Latvia (Latvija).
Latvia has a population of around 2.3 million, but not all of them have Latvian as their native language. Around one million speak Russian as their native language. This is because Latvia was part of the Soviet Union until 1991. Other languages spoken in Latvia, although much less widely, are Belarusian, Polish, Ukrainian, and Lithuanian. Latvian uses the Latin alphabet—like German and most languages spoken in Europe. However, there are also some special characters. Diacritical marks are also used. These are markings above or below the letters. Latvian has seven cases, four of which are also found in German: the nominative, the genitive, the dative, and the accusative. Latvian also has the vocative, the locative, and the instrumental cases. The accentuation in Latvian is easy to remember: the first syllable is always stressed. The Latvian alphabet consists of 33 letters.
