Interesting facts about the language
Kyrgyz has only been the official language of Kyrgyzstan since 1991 – since independence from the Soviet Union – and has the status of a national language. Before that, Russian was spoken in public life. Even today, Russian is present in the everyday lives of many Kyrgyz, and they generally speak both languages. Kyrgyz has only been a written language since the beginning of the 20th century. Before that, the language was only cultivated and passed on orally. From 1910 onwards, the first texts were written down in Arabic characters. Between 1928 and 1940, Kyrgyz began to be written using the Latin alphabet. Since 1940, Kyrgyz has been written using a modified form of the Cyrillic alphabet adapted to the Kyrgyz language. In recent times, there has been repeated discussion in Kyrgyzstan about whether to return to the Latin alphabet. However, it is unclear whether this will actually happen in the future. Kyrgyz belongs to the Turkic language family. A characteristic feature of these more or less related languages is their agglutinative language structure. To learn and understand Kyrgyz, you first need to understand what an agglutinative language is. The word agglutinate comes from Latin and means to clump or stick together. The central principle of this type of language structure is the suffix. A suffix is a suffix added to the end of a word, thus changing or expanding its meaning.
