Interesting facts about the language
Katalanisch ist eine eigene Sprache und keine Dialektvariante des Spanischen, auch wenn man dies in der Linguistik eine Zeit lang angenommen hatte. Katalanisch zählt, wie auch Spanisch, zu den romanischen Sprachen. Beide Sprachen werden sogar der gleichen Untergruppe zugerechnet (den iberoromanischen Sprachen - zusammen mit Portugiesisch und Galizisch). Innerhalb dieser Untergruppe nimmt das Katalanische aber eine Sonderstellung ein, denn es wird oft als Brückensprache zwischen der iberoromanischen und der galloromanischen Untergruppe der romanischen Sprachen bezeichnet.
Innerhalb der iberoromanischen Subgruppe unterscheiden sich die Sprachen im Wesentlichen in ihrer Aussprache und im Wortschatz. Die grammatischen Strukturen dieser Sprachen aber sind in mancher Hinsicht gleich und in vielen Fällen zumindest recht ähnlich. Das heißt, wenn Sie schon etwas Spanisch, Galizisch oder Portugiesisch können, werden Sie beim Lernen der katalanischen Grammatik oft auf schon bekannte Strukturen stoßen. Katalanisch wird von rund 10 Millionen Sprecher gesprochen und ihr Sprachraum liegt am Westrand des Mittelmeeres. Des weiteren wird Katalanisch in Italien in der Stadt Alghero und an der Küste Sardiniers, sowie in Teilen Frankreich und in Andorra gesprochen. Auf dem spanischen Staatsgebiet ist Katalanisch Amtssprache in den beiden autonomen Regionen Katalonien und Valencia. Außerdem spricht man auf allen Baleareninseln (Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa und Formentera) Katalanisch. Das katalanische Alphabet besteht aus 26 lateinischen Buchstaben wie das deutsche oder das englische Alphabet.

Catalonia is a region in northeastern Spain, located between the Mediterranean coast and the Pyrenees. Politically, Catalonia is one of Spain's 17 autonomous communities and, due to its historical and cultural characteristics, is considered one of the "historic autonomous communities" alongside the Basque Country and Galicia. Independence movements have gained great importance in Catalonia: Following a controversial referendum on October 27, 2017, the Catalan regional parliament declared Catalonia a republic independent of Spain, which was not recognized by the international community. The Spanish government declared this decision invalid and subsequently deposed the regional government and parliament. Since the new elections to the regional parliament on December 21, 2017, a separatist-dominated government has once again ruled Catalonia, meaning that the Catalonia crisis continues to simmer and largely determines political events in Spain. The capital of the region is Barcelona. The inhabitants are called Catalans. The official languages are Catalan, Spanish, and Aranese. Separated to the north by the Pyrenees, Catalonia borders France and Andorra, to the west the autonomous region of Aragon, and to the southwest the Valencian Community. Catalonia also includes the exclave of Llívia, which is surrounded by French territory. The autonomous community is approximately the size of Belgium. Approximately 7.6 million people live in Catalonia.
