Die isländische Sprache gehört zu der indogermanischen Sprachfamilie. Im Verlauf seiner Sprachgeschichte entwickelte sich das Isländische aus dem Altnordischen heraus. Isländisch wird heute von rund 300.000 Menschen als Muttersprache gesprochen. Bis auf rund 20.000 im Ausland lebende Isländer sind sämtliche seiner Sprecher auf Island beheimatet, wo es auch offizielle Amtssprache ist. Im Isländischen wird das lateinische Alphabet verwendet. Es besteht aus insgesamt 32 Buchstaben. Es beinhaltet drei Buchstaben, die für das Isländische besonders charakteristisch und im Deutschen unbekannt sind: Das Æ (æ) sowie das Ð (ð) und das Þ (þ). Letztere Buchstaben werden beide ähnlich wie das englische 'th' ausgesprochen. Die aus dem deutschen Alphabet bekannten Buchstaben C, W, Q und Z kommen im Isländischen wiederum nicht vor. Eine weitere Besonderheit des isländischen Alphabets ist, dass für jeden Vokal im Isländischen zwei unterschiedliche Aussprachen existieren. Zur Kennzeichnung der unterschiedlichen Betonung gibt es eine Vokalform mit und eine ohne Akzent. So wird beispielsweise der Buchstabe A als [a] und der Buchstabe Á als [au] ausgesprochen.
