Until the Roman Empire wrested political supremacy from Greece, Greek was a world language, used in trade, diplomacy, and education, and was the official language in the provinces of the Greek Empire.

Greek is spoken by approximately twelve million people worldwide today. The vast majority of these live in Greece, where approximately ten million speak Greek. Most speakers outside of Greece live in Cyprus, where approximately 600,000 people speak Greek. More than 300,000 people also live in Germany whose native language is Greek. The Greek alphabet consists of 24 letters.
