Interesting facts about the language

The Georgian language belongs to the South Caucasian (Kartvelian) language family, which in turn belongs to the Caucasian language family. The Caucasian language family comprises approximately 40 languages divided into three language families.

In addition to South Caucasian and Kartvelian, these include Abkhaz-Adyghe (Northwest Caucasian) and Post-Dagestan (Northeast Caucasian). The South Caucasian language family includes Georgian, Svan, San, Laz, and Mingrelian. There is no demonstrable relationship to any other language, neither Indo-European, Semitic, nor Altai. With more than four million speakers, Georgian is one of the largest single languages in the group of South Caucasian languages. As the official language of Georgia, Georgian is the only language in this group to have official status. Outside of Georgia, Georgian speakers can be found in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iran, Russia, and Ukraine.

The Georgian language uses not the Latin alphabet, but the Georgian alphabet, the so-called McHedruli script. This script developed in the 11th century AD. It consists of a total of 33 letters, divided into 28 consonants and 5 vowels. There is no distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters. There is a letter for each phoneme. Thus, the McHedruli script meets modern requirements much better than other scripts.
