Interesting facts about the language
Portuguese is a language from the Romance branch of the Indo-European languages. Portuguese is spoken as a native language by approximately 240 million people worldwide. In addition to Portugal, the language area includes Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau.
The Portuguese alphabet consists of 26 letters and 13 letters with diacritical extensions. Portuguese is a language that exists in two very different variants. A distinction is made between European/African Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. The differences between the two variants are historical: In the 18th century, Portuguese in Europe (and Africa) underwent significant changes, while Brazilian Portuguese remained in its more original form and did not undergo these changes. Whenever you would pronounce a sound with [ʃ] (as in beauty) or [ʒ] (as in genius) in Portugal, you would hear it pronounced with [s] (as in sweet) or [z] (as in cream) in Brazil.
The differences are not limited to pronunciation; there are also significant differences in grammar and spelling. In Brazil, for example, many letter combinations are written in a simplified manner (e.g., m instead of mm, or c instead of cç). In addition, indigenous languages (e.g., Guaraní and Tupi) have left their mark on the Brazilian vocabulary.
