Bosnian is a standard variety of the South Slavic branch of the Slavic languages and, like Croatian and Serbian, is based on a Shtokovian dialect. Bosnian is spoken as a native language by approximately 1.87 million people in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The wider language area includes Serbia and Montenegro, where it is spoken by approximately 168,000 people. The Bosnian alphabet consists of 30 letters.

Bosnien und Herzegowina auch nur Bosnien genannt, ist ein südosteuropäischer Bundesstaat. Er besteht geografisch im Norden aus der Region Bosnien, die rund 80% des Staatsgebietes ausmachen und der kleinen Region Herzegowina im Süden. Politische Teilgebiete des Bundesstaates sind die Republika Srpska, die Föderation Bosnien und Herzegowina sowie der Distrikt Brčko als Sonderverwaltungsgebiet. Bosnien liegt östlich des Adriatischen Meeres auf der Balkanhalbinsel. Im Norden und Westen grenzt Kroatien, im Osten Serbien und im Südosten Montenegro an das Land. Die Hauptstadt und größte Stadt im Land ist Sarajevo. Banja Luka, Tuzla, Zenica, Bijeljina und Mostar zählen zu den Großstädten. 3,5 Millionen Menschen leben in Bosnien i Herzegowina.
