Interesting facts about the language
The Armenian language is an Indo-European language that was long considered an Iranian dialect because it has adopted many loanwords from the Iranian language area (Parthian, Middle Persian, Persian).
Today, the Armenian language is divided into two language groups: Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian. Eastern Armenian is the official language of Armenia and is also spoken in Iran, Georgia, and Russia. Western Armenian is spoken primarily by Armenian exiles in the United States and Lebanon. The total number of speakers is approximately 6.7 million, of which approximately 3 million live in Armenia today.
Armenian has many harsh-sounding consonant combinations. Both Old Armenian and Modern Armenian have a complex declension system with seven cases. There is also no grammatical gender of nouns. Before World War II, around 50 dialects were spoken in Armenia. The old complex verb forms of these various dialects were replaced by new forms that require the use of auxiliary verbs. The subjunctive mood of Old Armenian no longer exists today. Grammatically, Old Armenian shared many similarities with Greek, whereas Modern Armenian, after centuries of geographical proximity to the Ottoman Empire, adopted some grammatical peculiarities of Turkish (e.g., postpositions instead of prepositions).
